I feel like I’m busy all day but I don’t accomplish anything, how can I change it? While there are a plenty of sophisticated answers to this question, there is also a pretty simple one that changes the game.
If you want to stop feeling like you didn’t achieve anything in life or throughout the day, then stop concentrating on shit.
In this article we’ll dig into a few life case examples of people being depressed because they didn’t achieve anything, personal goals examples, why it is important to set goals and how to do some smart goal setting. So, let’s jump right into the issue.
Let’s think of a situation where Jack needs to write his poem for a school olympiad called Nerdy Legends.
Jack is a very active, self-motivated, smart guy, and he knows the right way to getting things done. He’s got a lot of goal trackers, goal managers and other goal and progress tracking applications on his smartphone. He’s also got his personal goal worksheet where he loves to write his goals.
So, here is Jack, armed to the teeth. He spends a few hours filling in the information about his achievements such as how many words he wrote and how much he still needs to write, etc. Some apps don’t work without internet connection, so often times when he fills in the vital data he gets distracted by a variety of messenger apps.
Jack is a tech guy. He loves to set personal goals and smash all the data into his phone. He has a lot of personal examples of life goals which he could literally sell to those who are in need.
Jack likes to make notes of his visions and goals so freaking much that he forgets about actually achieving his goals.
Moreover, when Jack is writing down his next goal without even achieving the previous one he feels at the top. He thinks that when he is so motivated and when he sets up his goals it’s enough to become successful in life or at least successful in achieving the damn task such as writing the poem. He seems to be concentrating on writing his accomplishments more often than the poem for an olympiad itself.
Now, let’s break down the problem and see what’s happening here.
So, the problem is that Jack feels satisfied only chatting about his goals and moving towards the pseudo-success. He feels enough to write down his goals, and stay fulfilled. Is that what Jack wants?
Spending more time on trying to track your progress is not as productive and effective as avoid tracking your progress at all and just start killing your goals.
Obviously, Jack wants to see results quickly or at least he wants them to be visualized. It’s great. There is nothing wrong with setting up your milestones and tracking your progress when you’re working towards your goals.
Just like Jack, I used to create fancy goal worksheets where I would literally release my inner designer. I would spend several hours working on the paper with my goals making it look amazing. When I’m finally done, I need to start working on the goals themselves.
Guess what? 3 days in and I give up.
Instead of spending tons of time and energy on crafting another success plan – throw this shit away and start doing the task.
There is no better way to achieve anything than actually sit your butt down and do it. The most important thing is that you turn off all the unnecessary distractors like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.
I have a friend, and when he starts doing his things he always opens up every damn messenger that he has “not to miss the important information”. I trolled him like crazy. I would write in every messenger to him, and he’d be like “Man, go away, I’m busy”. I said, “Well, then turn off this shit.” Guess what? He would spend his time chatting with girls and boys like me who were just chilling and writing nonsense to him. Hell yeah.
Want more examples? Here is another one.
Nancy is an absolutely stunning girl. Not only she is very beautiful she is also very intelligent. She is also seeking advice on how to stop feeling like she didn’t achieve anything in life.
Let’s take a look at what her day looks like. Nancy likes to blog. She has just started, and she understands that she needs to attract more people to her website, and the best way to do it is to produce high-quality content at least once a week.
Nancy’s got a regular 9/5 job and she tries to squeeze some ideas for an article when she’s back from work. She’s also got 2 spare days Saturday and Sunday. In some normal pace, it takes 1-5 hours to research the topic and 2-5 hours to write an article.
Nancy needs to build a blog because she wants to make some extra cash from ads and affiliate programs.
As you can see here’s what Nancy has:
Overall, she has 3 clear things that are necessary for writing articles once a week. What does she do every evening?
After work, she comes back home and starts cooking. She also doesn’t like when her house looks like a mess, and she loves to keep things in order. She does house cleaning every evening.
As Nancy is more productive in the daytime she quickly wastes all her energy on doing house cleaning and cooking in the evening. It also takes her all 3 hours that she has each working day.
On weekends, Nancy feels like she needs to do some walking, sports or other activities. It’s been a tough week and she needs to relax. It seems and feels like she’s never got time for writing an article. It may even be depressing that she will never achieve her goal of becoming a blogger and creating a passive income with some monthly $500.
Nancy, learn to sacrifice things. There is no other way you can achieve things without making at least small sacrifices.
If you feel like you need to do some house cleaning every evening, maybe some cooking, then there is no way you can write the article.
All these house cleanings, walking with friends (when things need to be done), YouTube videos and other shit like that is a temporary happiness. Even if you clean your house today, tomorrow it will still look like shit because some magic portion of dust will get in anyway.
When you cook yourself you feel like you’re saving your money. When you’re actually wasting something more valuable – time. You will be hungry 3 hours after anyway. Is it worth spending 3 hours to cook something? Buy already-made food in the supermarket. For me it’s actually cheaper than cooking myself. Because I buy exactly as much as I need to stay fulfilled during the day.
What happens when you sacrifice some of your house cleaning, walking, cooking, etc.? When you can sit down and write an article and then when you can sit down again and write another article next week, you’ll see that people are actually seeing your effort. They will start coming.
And if you produce quality content they will read it, share it and enjoy it.
What’s just happened? Nancy has just refocused on things that matter to her in the future. She needs passive income, and the way she is going to get it is to write an article every single week. She will not do as much house cleaning anymore and she’ll cook a few times a week to store some food in advance. She doesn’t like buying food, so she needs to find some workarounds with self-made food.
Prioritize your tasks. It will save you from “I just turned 27. I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything in my life” or “I’m 38, and I feel depressed. I haven’t achieved anything in my life”.
If you want to avoid this scenario then you’ve just learned why it is important to set goals smart and prioritize them. These personal goals examples should help you achieve your goals in life.
