When you are depressed there is no better treatment than music. I know quite a few people including myself who listened to depressing rock songs because they thought it’s going to help them. And it did. Listening to music when you’re grieving, sad or missing somebody can help you overcome depression and get on your feet faster.
Sometimes the more you’re depressed the more songs you need to listen to in order to start feeling better. It can last for days, weeks or even 6 months of depression, sometimes the feeling of depression lasts for years. Why do we choose to listen to sad music when we are depressed?
If you ever asked somebody who is depressed what they are doing right now you could probably hear this response “I’m listening to music.” As somebody who has been in a deep depression, I can say that you’re listening to music because it feels like the author of the song is the only one who understands you.
You feel like the songwriter was the one who has gone through all the suffering, grievance and sadness that you’re going through and this is the only one who can help you overcome depression. When you listen to songs about missing someone who died, feeling lonely songs, songs about being broken and other you may start to feel better. Music helps you feel that somebody shares your suffering and pain, Durham University study suggests.
What kind of music can heal your depression? Some independent survey shows that country music helps you deal with depression, but it’s also the genre that has the highest suicide rate. For me, rock music works better. Rock songs about depression compete with country music somewhere at the same level, I guess.
So let’s kick this off with my favorite artist – Bryan Adams. His songs helped me overcome the most difficult times in my life.
The lyrics of this song is incredible. It speaks about the struggle the one is going through, it speaks about something you once had and that was taken from you, and now you have no other choice but to accept it and keep fighting to make yourself feel alive again.
Getting back on your feet is a complicated and long process, but once you make it through, you will develop the character that a lot of people can’t afford.
“Never let go” by Bryan Adams is absolutely stunning. The interpretation of the lyrics depends on what story you have behind. For me, however, it has kind of the same meaning as “Sound the bugle.” But also, it speaks about the ego that we, people, have. We usually make ourselves look larger than life in the eyes of others. It may or may not be true for you, but because of that ego we tend to take more, and we forget about giving.
The problem with being a receiver and not a giver is that everything you do is connected to the outside happiness. When you receive something intentionally, you concentrate on things that you think will make you happy, and those things are coming from the outside world. When you give something away you already have that. The happiness and fulfillment that you’re looking for already live inside you. And the best way to find it out is to start giving.
This is not about being a people pleaser, and it’s not about giving away your last penny, you need to share wisely. The best way to deal with depression is to come to somebody who is depressed and make friends with them. You already know everything about this person feelings, why not exchange some thoughts about it? Thus, you can get over it much faster.
If you’ve got somebody in your life who is always finding fault with you or attacking you every time they have an opportunity, then this song is for you. It will help you get the confidence back and prove this person wrong.
If you’re about to put an end to your life than you might as well listen to this song. The pain and suffering you’re going through are as temporary as a season change with one remark only. Your season is changing when you choose. Choose wisely.
It’s a serious inner fight when you’ve lost somebody, especially at a young age. The time literally stops for you. In the “World so cold” you can hear lines “I’m counting days”, and you’re. And these are the only rational calculations that are going in your head. This is a song about missing someone who died and it’s heartbreaking, but you need that. Another song that you can listen to is by Black Stone Cherry “Things My Father Said”.
This person died for you to live. I’d recommend you read a book “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom. It will definitely help you get over the times that you’re in now.
When you feel that you can no longer keep up with the difficult times in your life and you’re struggling not to fall into the depression this song may give an extra boost of energy to keep moving forward. When something is changing in your life it can be really stressful, and it’s good to have music that supports you along the way.
Whether you’re a religious person or not you can find inspiration in this song by Ashes Remain. It’s an amazing composition that makes you strive for replenishing your life with new colors and ideas for a change.
I’m not a religious person, so I had to tie the lyrics up to my own being. I believe that you’re capable of incredible things in your life, and it’s you who can stay committed when the times are hard and nobody else believes in you.
Often times, we turn to songs to listen to when depressed because we find no other people around us who can understand what we are going through. And when people actually talk to us we don’t listen because we know that they’ve never been in this situation and they never know what’s like. “Right here” is a great song that understands you.
Despite the fact that some people may not understand you going on your own is also not an option. And this what this song is saying about. If you’re suffering from depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder the best medication is to find people who can support you.
If you’re more comfortable with internet communities or depression forums or anything like that you can give it a shot as well. But you need to speak to real people because right now you may think you’re alone and forgotten and nobody cares about you. Music can not only heal you but it can also kill you because it intensifies the feeling of misery of sitting in a room and hearing nothing else but music.
When you’re sitting alone in the room you have only you and your thoughts and this is the scariest thing that can ever happen to you. If you’re afraid of people you hate or whatever just think about this: “Why do murderers, thieves and other criminals are put into jail?” Four walls, no people, you and your thoughts may be one of the answers. Do not isolate yourself. Walk outside. Feel socialized. Be around people.
Have you ever heard a proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”? If so, then it’s the right time to apply this knowledge to your life. Do not deal with the hard times on your own. Find friends, build communities, inspire other people to overcome depression.
What I don’t like about the lyrics is that it’s sung that you can’t do something alone. You can do everything. But to do (accomplish) something you need to actually do. Every day.
In any difficult situation of my life, I had to rely on myself and my current knowledge to get the hell out of there. There were people who supported me, of course. But before I found the support from those people I needed to believe in myself. I had to have faith that I’m capable of making a change. I didn’t hope, I had faith. Jim Carrey once said “I don’t believe in hope. Hope is a beggar.”
When I went to the university and began making changes in my life this song helped me understand that the past is in the past and I can’t get it. I can only see it and take all the experiences from those times to make a better future for myself.
If you’re still living in the past and struggling to concentrate on the future this song is for you.
After you’ve motivated yourself that the best is yet to come and you’re ready to get the best out of every day you live, it’s time to give up the past and start again from scratch.
However, the actual meaning of the song is about divorce or break up and if you’re going through these times “starting again” may not be the option I would consider “starting new”.
Once you’ve set a goal to make a better future for yourself and you’re ready to start again. For me a better future means earning X sum of money, being in relationships, helping at least one person each year, etc. Do not ever be the same, be better.
For me, being better means this. If you had some problem in the past that you couldn’t solve anyhow and now it’s a piece of cake for you – you’ve become better. If you couldn’t find a job without experience and now you can change a job whenever you want, and you also have X months or years of experience behind you – you’ve become better.
To sum it up here is my list of depressing rock songs that can help you get over the hard times:
These rock songs helped me cope with depression and I hope they will help you as well. Listen to meaningful music and let it heal you. If you have some bad memories connected to a song do not let it kill you. Forget about that song and move on.
You may listen to 100 depression songs but it will never replace communication with people. Be social.
